What is mold?

Molds are simple, microscopic organisms, present virtually everywhere indoors and out. However, high levels of mold can cause serious problems.

Can mold cause health problems?

Mold can wreak havoc with every part of the body, including the mind. Many symptoms of ill health, physical and mental can result from ongoing exposure of harmful molds growing indoors. Symptoms usually develop gradually and are often vague, nonspecific and can be difficult to diagnose.

Where does mold grow and what should I look for?

Mold will grow and multiply whenever the conditions are right. Growth on surfaces can often be seen in the form of discoloration, frequently green, gray, brown or black but also white and a variety of other colors. Common sources of indoor molds are, any type of water leakage or flooding, feeling of dampness, water stains on the floor, walls or ceilings and anything with a musty odor.

How do I get rid of the mold?

It is impossible to remove all indoor mold and mold spores. They will not grow If moisture is not present. Indoor mold growth can and should be prevented by controlling moisture indoors. If there is mold growth in your home/business, you must fix the water problem immediately. If you clean the mold, but do not fix the water problem, it is likely the mold will come back. In most cases, professionals like Volusia-Flagler Water & Fire Restoration, Inc. will need to be called to conduct mold remediation.

What should I do if I suspect that mold may be causing a health hazard in my home/business?

Contact a professional industrial hygienist or a certified indoor environmentalist to perform an indoor air quality test. This will determine if there are high levels of mold in your home/business, as well as what types of mold are present.
